That's not a bad thing, in and of itself, and I can definitely state that there's no love triangle to contend with. On that note, a few other fairly standard YA tropes go pretty unquestioned here. There's an expected dose of girl-against-the-world in here, but if you pick up a YA urban fantasy book with some dystopian themes with a woman protagonist, that's pretty much a staple-of-the-genre trope (and a good one, might I add!). The antagonists throughout the story are all pretty cartoonish, but honestly, it's not hard to see with the power the antagonists have. After that, the host of side characters in her group are pretty well done. Lore, our protagonist, is definitely our most developed character. Having also just read a YA book where the foreshadowing was done pretty poorly, this was a breath of fresh air in that regard.

There are scenes that I really didn't see coming, but I totally should have. In fact, the first major twist isn't for a few chapters. That's not to say the book starts off weakly, by any means, but compared to the rest of the book, the twists and turns and reveals along the way, it's played pretty straight. In fact, the preview, the first six chapters, was relatively meh. What I'll tell you is it's nowhere near as straightforward as the preview made me believe. As you've likely guessed, Lore, our protagonist from whom we get our title and our (gorgeous) cover, is that lone remaining member.įrom there, you can make some assumptions about the rest of the story. There's one member left of the House of Perseus, and she's not in the game anymore. There were nine houses, but by the time we get to the story (now-ish), we're down to five, more or less. If someone kills the god during that time period, they take over that god's spot the next time around. Yeah, while that might not be the most unique premise ever, Bracken took it in a really interesting direction.Įssentially, every seven years, the nine of the Greek gods will turn mortal for seven days. It's a YA urban fantasy that leans heavily into Greek mythology. I had some spare time this weekend, got a copy, and picked it back up.

I liked the preview but neglected writing a review, and then I realized the book was out.
